Help me give my students an innovative way to deepen their vocabulary and strengthen their background knowledge on everyday topics and events by using Scholastic News Magazines.
I am beginning my teaching career in a rural, low socioeconomic, Title I school that is 101 years old. It is my old alma mater from my elementary years. When my 3rd graders walk into class they will be full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them. The kiddos are kind, loving, and adore learning with their whole hearts. I want them to know I believe in them and that they can do anything. This is such a big year for them!
In my class, I have eager learners from different backgrounds.
I will have several students with IEPs who attend resource classes, and others with intervention plans due to working below grade level. My kiddos' learning levels will span from early elementary to grade level! They need experiences daily with hands-on materials that will help stimulate their creative thinking and reasoning skills. It makes it challenging to find activities to reach each child where they are academically. When you walk into my room you will hear a gentle hum of learning with a side of laughter.
My Project
With these magazines my students will have the opportunity to really dig deep in Social Studies and Science. The resources and These magazine will enrich their Social Studies and Science time by explaining historical and scientific events in ways that they can understand.
Through these magazines and resources, my kids will see recent and relevant Social Studies and Science events come to life and become excited to learn about animals, holidays, special events and people ect.
With a lack of science and social studies resources, the curriculum is integrated through reading and math. These weekly magazines for each child will give them an opportunity to try expand on the curriculum and look forward to seasonal and weekly topics such as Fire Safety, Fall, Martine Luther King Jr, Dental Health, President's Day, Recycling, Ocean Life just to name a few. My school does not have the funding to purchase the Scholastic Magazines for this year, and my I would love nothing more than to be able for my new 3rd graders to utilize them this year. They are truly a wonderful resource that we so desperately need.
Students strengthen their reading skills by reading information about important topics while learning about new places and people around the world. It sparked up classroom discussion as the students discuss their opinions while working on the projects with their peers. Each weekly magazine aligns with the stands-based curriculum and they also align with the events and seasons throughout the year. These resources can help my students improve their reading comprehension, informational writing, and sparked interests in certain topics. I hope to provide Scholastic News magazines for my class this school year!
