My Students
The students at my school are from diverse backgrounds, and we have over 40 different home languages represented. Their countries of origin span the continents from Nepal to Bosnia, from Togo to Mexico, and we have welcomed refugees from countries that include Myanmar, Burundi, Syria, and Iraq.
My students love to learn, and they are always eager to explore new ideas.
Though they face challenges that include poverty and being immigrants in a major urban center, my students work hard to meet the high expectations I have for them in their learning.
My Project
Scholastic News will be a tool for my 3rd graders to become more aware of current events around the world. The content will challenge them to think critically about the issues of our time, and it will be a springboard for academic discussions that will grow their oral language skills in English.
Your support of this project will ensure that my students learn about current events as well as help them gain crucial nonfiction reading skills that include identifying main ideas, cause/effect relationships, and the structure of the text.
Scholastic News will also teach my students about different cultures, and it will contribute to shaping in them an empathetic worldview as they work together in groups to analyze the content and understand social issues at their level. I look forward to using this important resource in my classroom and coming alongside my students as a learner this coming school year. Thank you for your support that will provide this perspective-enhancing resource for my students!
