Implementing the new CCSS requires students to read more informational/non-fiction texts, which my classroom is lacking in. My third grade students were lucky enough to have Scholastic News and Science Spin last year and I am hopeful my incoming class will have the same opportunities.
My third grade students all have learning disabilities, but many other abilities as well, such as curiosity, motivation, energy, and desire to learn.
They all come from low-income families and qualify for free breakfast and lunch at school. My elementary school is in an urban district.
My Project
My students will use the materials I am requesting in many ways. We will be able to have a weekly Scholastic News magazine on social studies topics from around the world. We will be able to have a monthly Science Spin magazine on topics my students need more exposure to. Unfortunately, we only receive science as a special period (45 minutes a week) that needs to be supplemented in the classroom. Finally, with 100 Words workbooks, my third graders will learn high-frequency words that are essential to reading fluency and success.
Donations toward this project will help improve our third grade classroom experience and change my students' lives for the better.
Often, resources and supplemental curriculum resources are included in district budgets and taken for granted; however, my district provides no additional funding toward these materials. Having engaging texts will help formulate a well-rounded curriculum, focusing on social studies, science, and high-frequency words, all of which we need more practice with!
