Scholastic News & Super Science to Excel in 5th Grade!

My Students

At the end of the school year, I hope to inspire a continued love of reading and learning in my 5th grade students. I strive to provide my students with engaging materials to continue to encourage their reading while also improving their reading abilities through appropriately leveled texts.

My students love learning and are excited to read magazines at school.

They enjoy the variety of news articles present in the magazines as well as the novelty of reading a magazine at school. They are interested in learning in all subject areas and show an enthusiasm and hunger for learning that inspires my teaching daily. They work as hard as they can and support the younger students in the school as well as the other teachers as often as they can. I would describe my school and classroom as being very community oriented and innovative. Our teachers and students are always trying new things and collaborating to make it happen!

My Project

My students will use this subscription to Scholastic News and Super Science magazine during our daily reading group instruction. Students will benefit from being able to read grade-level non-fiction text while answering close reading questions and discussing their new learning with their reading group. Students will also be able to read and work independently on skills that they need to practice by grabbing a magazine and an accompanying skills sheet. This will provide students with individualized, self-paced instruction outside of the reading group. Additionally, Scholastic News allows students to read or listen to news articles on their website. This provides students who struggle with reading access to the same reading materials as their peers. It also adds another layer of novelty to the magazine reading experience at school which keeps students engaged in reading and excited about literacy-based technology activities.

This project will make a difference in the lives of my students because it will support a group of students who may not typically be interested in reading.

Magazines are less-threatening to students and they get students excited about reading and learning. Scholastic News and Super Science will cover Common Core State Standards while keeping all readers enthusiastic about literacy, science and learning!
