My Students

Our classroom is a second grade room at a neighborhood school in Chicago. Throughout the day, we work on social skills, reading, science, writing, and math. We try to use our own experiences to create new learning and build on what we already know. The students in this classroom are very diverse with many different needs and strengths. They do all, however, have a common goal to do the best that they can do.

My goal as a teacher is to instill the love of learning in my students.

To help accomplish this, we work in small groups to give the students exactly what they need. I also try to give the students as many opportunities to explore and do fun activities throughout the day. I try to incorporate their interests into the daily curriculum to help them stay engaged and have fun.

My Project

In order to be a life long reader, children need to be exposed to many different types of texts that they can read. Scholastic News magazines are an excellent way to do so. This project will bring a different type of text into the classroom for students to practice reading.

This magazine also will be sent home.

Many of my students do not have a wide variety of texts in their library that they can read themselves. When this project is funded, students will be able to bring magazines home to read and reread. This will also give them an opportunity to share their learning with their families at home.
