Over 80% of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of these children don't have access to the selection of reading and math materials that children from more affluent families take for granted. Our children have a great hunger for knowledge but often lack the materials to fulfill this appetite. Our school is a neighborhood school in a small New England city. There is a strong sense of community here between parents, staff, and residents that truly makes a difference in the school experience.
My Project
My first-grade students need more reading material than our school texts always offer. For my class, I need to help them make connections with what is happening in the world around them. The Scholastic News magazine subscriptions I have requested will bring in a variety of topics that will engage my students and make them excited to read. We'll be using the magazines during our silent reading time and then again during small group instruction to promote literacy development. Since we are a high poverty community, many of my students lack the funds to purchase books and magazines. Your donation to this project will enable them to have access to kid-friendly news from around the world. They will have an opportunity to learn about current events, far away places, and develop skills that will put them on the path to being lifelong learners!
