I am the second grade teacher in the school that serves a very high number of ELL students. This year, I have over 30 amazing ELL (English language learning) students in my classroom, and one fourth are newcomers. I teach them all subjects – Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing.
There are over five different languages spoken in my classroom, and it represents a wide variety of individuals with different social and economic backgrounds.
All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of them receive free school supplies, too.
A typical day in my classroom consists of many differentiated learning activities where students constantly interact with each other and learn from each other. We literally use every second that we have and my kids are exhausted by the end of the day, Ha! Honestly, though, our day goes by so speedy fast that we don't even realize the day is over.
My Project
I would like to offer a class set of Scholastic News so my students can learn about the importance of current events around the world. These resources have proved to me to be very useful in teaching current events. Second graders are eager to learn about events that are taking place around them. If they have the opportunity to read and learn about these events, it will increase their knowledge. Scholastic also has great activities within their weekly magazines. In the classroom, we will work on these activities in small groups for better engagement and understanding. Also, we can have lots of class discussions that will promote the ability for students to share with others what they have learned. I will pair English language learners with other students that speak the same language so that they can also participate in the activities.
I would love to have the opportunity to be able to share this great magazine with my students.
Also, this magazine teaches about the different cultures in the world which enables students to learn and understand other students in their school. This magazine is a great learning tool for teachers to help students advance in their knowledge of current events.
