Do you remember reading old textbooks about events that happened million years ago? My students have outdated textbooks that do not connect to what is going on in their world today! I am on a quest to help students grow to love informational text through fun articles and amazing pictures.
My 5th grade students attend a Title 1 School or a High Needs School located in Southern California.
For some, they do not have opportunities to experience the world around them. That is where I step in! As our school is starting to implement Common Core standards, I want to be able to provide them informational text with all the possibilities of being a successful reader and learner .
My Project
I would love to have Scholastic News Magazine for my 5th grade class. I want my students to know that there is a world outside of their little community. Most of my students think that current events would be things happening in their own communities and not aware what is going outside of their "bubble"! I will be using the magazines weekly to encourage the students to discuss and debate the articles and to enjoy reading about the many interesting places, events and people in their world. These magazines will also help with reading fluency and comprehension skills which we are always trying to improve!
Your donation will help my students learn about what is going on in the world around them as well as right there in the classroom.
I hope to create a classroom of globally aware citizens with the help of this project. Thank you!
