My Students

My school is a Title I school with over 80% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch - the highest percentage in our district. The mobility rate has always been high, but over the last five years, it has increased dramatically. Our school is a safe haven where students are fed, clothed, and cared for above all else.

"The object of teaching a child is to enable him to get along without a teacher."-Elbert Hubbard.

This quote reflects my goal as a teacher - to create independent learners. Each morning, I am eagerly greeted by an amazing and diverse group of students who come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Many of my students are struggling to cope with the multifaceted dilemmas of living in poverty.

Despite their obstacles, the one thing that I see in all their eyes is an eagerness to learn. They hang on every word I say and even beg to stay after school to do more work. My goal is to provide them with educational experiences that will sustain and promote this sense of curiosity and desire for lifelong learning.

My Project

Many of my students rarely have opportunities to experience life situations outside of their immediate community. Most only experience these situations through school field trips. Scholastic News magazine brings them the news in a way that students can understand. It presents the world and social problems in an easy to understand format with beautiful and interesting pictures. It also provides an additional map and graph reading skills that are important for taking standardized tests. The Scholastic reader often prompts meaningful discussions in classrooms and allows students to share their personal perspectives.

I want my students to maintain a high interest in reading.

With the Scholastic News magazines, I will be able to integrate reading with other subject areas such as science, social studies, and health. Not only will my students be exposed to more nonfiction texts with the Scholastic News, but the magazines are also aligned with the Common Core Standards. They will be so excited to know that at the end of the day they will have their very own magazines to take home with them.

Scholastic News magazine would give them an opportunity to have their very own "magazine" they can read together in class and then take home to their families. Scholastic News magazines were exciting when I was a child. I know that the same excitement will be sparked by my young people! Your donation will give my students an opportunity to experience the joy and purpose of reading outside the requirements of the school. If they learn to love reading now, they'll learn to love learning without realizing it is work. Please help me help them move forward! Give them something to look forward to each week!
