Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher of 29 years, but have moved down from fifth to third grade. I have been overjoyed to work with this caring, loving, and enthusiastic age level. Their backgrounds and abilities vary widely. We are a K-8 school where community is taught and instilled in all grade levels.
Third graders possess a magical fascination with all possibilities, and they are eager to succeed and take chances.
My students have the natural love of learning about the world, sharing ideas, and gathering knowledge.
Over half of my students are performing below grade level, and struggle with ADD, ADHD, spectrum conditions, grief, and learning disabilities. Many come to school with worries and anxiety, and many struggle to fit in. The classroom is where they come to embrace learning. I want all my students to feel welcome and accepted in our classroom.
My Project
Nonfiction literature is vital to success in school, and Scholastic News is a resource students find engaging, enjoyable and memorable. The magazine provides resources that are current, relevant and fascinating. It keeps third graders interested, which creates a greater understanding and mastery of the text.
I will use Scholastic News to introduce topics that fit easily into the curriculum.
Many of the articles and resources can be expanded to areas such as research, art, social studies, and of course, meaningful discussions. The magazine's articles and layout make it easy to teach strategies for vocabulary and nonfiction comprehension.
