My students are friendly, funny, and inquisitive. Their academic levels range from below grade-level to above grade-level. My school is a Title I school, where all students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are a close-knit family. I am proud to say this is a school with no bullying concerns and with students who are responsible, caring, and proactive. They are involved in rigorous learning all day long and welcome new and engaging materials that align with the lesson and curriculum.
Scholastic News Magazine highlights subjects that are relatable and engaging for students, I.e.: this year popular articles were about Safety on the Internet, Robots, Recycling, a Toy Craze and caring of animals all over the world. These non-fiction articles will allow students to access informational text on their level.
Being a multicultural and diverse school, the articles will teach them to embrace other cultures and tolerate others' perspectives as well as show respect for others and appreciate diversity in the world.
While using Scholastic magazines this past year, students enjoyed the introductory videos which were a great way to frontload them with background information. The teacher resources have added further support and align with NC Common Core Standards. Students are able to read the magazine independently, during guided reading or in a whole group setting. I am looking forward to having this excellent resource in my classroom next year for my new third graders.
