Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Teach for America alumna teaching at a Title 1 school in southwest Houston, Texas. I teach Pre-Kindergarten in an inclusion and English as a Second Language setting, with twenty 3-5 year olds in my class.
It is my main goal to ensure that my students are prepared to excel beyond Pre-K.
We will do this by working towards class and individual goals- to be good readers, good writers, good mathematicians, good friends, and good speakers. Something that is very important to me is Oral Language and Vocabulary development, and my projects will center around items that help my students grow in those areas as well as other content areas including math, literacy, social studies, and science.
My Project
I am requesting a class-set of Scholastic "Let's Find Out" magazines for my students to engage with this school year. Through these magazines, students will be exposed to new themes and concepts through engaging stories, non-fiction text, and pictures. Students will practice literacy skills, including beginning reading, by reading their magazines together as a class and completing the activities inside during our integrated science and social studies lessons.
Students will use the Scholastic "Let's Find Out" magazines to learn both at home and at school.
After receiving the magazines each month, students will get to take them home to share their learning with family members. This provides a way for families to engage in the learning we are doing at school. Students and families will be able to use the vocabulary from the Scholastic "Let's Find Out" magazines in conversations and to extend learning.
