Our school is one of eight elementary schools in our district. It is also one of the smallest with a total about 350 in the student body population. Over three-fourths of our families qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
Although many families qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, our students continue to return each day wanting to learn more than they had the previous day.
They also enjoy the adventures we take together and the friendships created in our family-like environment.
My Project
Scholastic News is an excellent way for three first grade classes to learn about different topics in science and social studies. This weekly magazines series correlates directly into the requirements necessary to teach by the state of Indiana. This tool also helps with increasing student vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension, all intertwined with the discussion of academic topics. Along with the paper version each week, teachers have access to online content- worksheets, games, and video extensions- to extend the learning of each top learned. Additionally, they have access to many past topics covered for review or enrichment in the classroom. We have used this in the past as well as a different series and this is the preferred option, as it is more interactive with the students.
