My students are in great need of nonfiction text. Through different programs I have been able to build my classroom library, but nonfiction is much harder to find and having Scholastic Magazines is a way that we can each have a copy and work together.
I have a class full of avid learners, waiting to get information, full of desire to learn.
We do not have access to a ton of resources beyond what I am able to offer them. We live in an area where the nearest big town is 30 minutes away, and my students don't get a lot of the opportunities other students get because we are "so far away." Because of this, learning is not a top priority for much of the community. I want to be there to make a difference and prove education is exciting and fun!
My Project
I have been able to stock our classroom library through many thrift store shopping sprees, Scholastic Book Orders, and from hand-me-downs from other teachers. But I love using Scholastic News. There is something about this magazine that solidifies learning in my students. The magazine has added an online resource where there are games to teach about the subject, videos on the subject, and vocabulary practice. We would be able to use the magazine to look at how nonfiction text is set up, as well as learn about wonderful subjects that Scholastic decides to highlight.
It has been proven that if you read nonfiction text, you are better able to retain information.
Recently in our library, our librarian opened our whole library for my class. I didn't think much about it until every single one of my thirty students brought up a nonfiction book. I realized then that kids love learning. Sure, kids love stories, chapter books, and other kinds of reading, but there is something about nonfiction text that makes kids crave learning. I want to bring that in my class!
