My students need to learn about their world from a kid friendly resource like Scholastic News.
All students deserve the opportunity to learn using the best tools available in today's classroom. Unfortunately, funds aren't allocated to our area because of socioeconomic disadvantages that negatively impact our tax base.
I teach in a Title 1 school in rural Virginia that has been vastly impacted by the loss of industry; therefore, more than half of our school population qualifies for free and reduced lunch.
In addition, budget reductions have had an effect on resources needed to teach students to the standards of today.
You can help students who need additional assistance by providing materials to help me create engaging learning experiences to teach all subjects in a variety of ways. The students I serve need multidimensional methods of exposure to build and enrich their understanding of concepts.
Recently, there has been a lot of change and chaos in our country. Our students hear their parents discuss these things and hear one side. They need to be exposed to other views of their world while learning how to be active citizens. A class subscription to Scholastic News will offer students the ability feel informed and to form their own opinions. These magazines include recent world news as well as highlights in different disciplines such as science, math, charts, graphs, maps, and social studies.
The entire fifth grade team will have the opportunity to become informed citizens and learn about their world from a kid friendly magazine.
