I teach 7th grade math in a rural middle school. My students come from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. I try to find ways to make class relevant to each of them, regardless of their backgrounds.
My goal each year is to help them each grow as people as well as learners to help them become the awesome individuals they will be.
In class I try to make math relevant for my students and we like to work with real world problems.
Help us learn math using relevant current events! Scholastic Math magazines offer math skills and concepts in a real world context. The students will be able to read about current and interesting events while practicing their math skills.
Not only will they be practicing their math skills, but they will be practicing reading.
Reading in a math class is different than reading a story or novel. We will be practicing strategies to read in math, and what they should be looking for when reading for math.
I would like to have a whole class set so that my students can each have a magazine while we are working.
