Students need interesting and engaging reading materials at a variety of ability levels.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but the majority of them come from poverty and are considered "at risk." Almost all of them read significantly below grade level and need exciting, high interest, low level reading materials to help them get the skills they need to catch up.
I want my students to develop a love of reading a variety of genres, while exploring current events.
I am requesting 28 copies of Scholastic Action Magazine to supplement sixth grade reading curriculum. Scholastic Action Magazines will provide my students with reading materials that are current, colorful, interesting, and written at three different reading levels, helping to give them success as they build fluency and comprehension. Along with this subscription comes online motivating materials to boost student reading and writing skills, such as videos, activity pages, differentiated articles, games, and quizzes.
Many of my students are very reluctant readers.
I have used Action Magazine in the past, and my students excitedly looked forward to their arrival each month. I believe that using these supplemental magazines in my class will help raise the reading achievement of my struggling readers. Perhaps equally as important, magazines are great for motivating students to want to learn! Thanks for supporting this project!
