This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 8, 9, 10 and 11-year-olds who are eager to learn cursive and multiplication. They can't wait to go on field trips and learn third-grade games. My students this year are wonderful readers- YAY! I want to continue to provide them with a print-rich classroom.
Since all of my students come from low-income homes, they do not have access to as many reading materials and extracurricular experiences as other children in neighboring districts.
Some go home to empty houses and are in charge of younger family members. Even with added responsibilities, they are still happy to read any materials I send home with them.
My Project
I'm most excited to have the students act out the plays that are aligned to third grade standards. Acting out plays helps bring their reading to life and gives it a purpose. I have no doubt that students will always remember the time in third grade that they acted out one of Aesop's fables. The lesson learned will stick with them for a lifetime.
I am also excited to put the Honors set of books on display in my classroom library.
My students love reading and appreciate new books whenever they are introduced. Getting students to love reading is a primary goal of teachers and new book sets accomplish just that!
