Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently a Teach For America Corps Member teaching seventh grade at a middle school in Oakland, California. I teach predominately English Language Learners, many of whom read at least three grade levels below compared to their peers across the country in much more affluent communities.
Currently we are finishing up our first novel ?Esperanza Rising,? and moving on to our next novel ?A House On Mango Street.? While teaching this novel and holding Socratic Seminars in the classroom, I notice that my students were merely reading the novel for literal meaning, rather than contextual comprehension and analysis. In addition, reading seemed like a daunting task for my students, therefore an intervention was necessary.
As a result, I introduced an engaging reading comprehension strategy. I introduced to my students the concept of organizing their thoughts, interacting with the novel and ideas within a novel by using post-its, highlighters and index cards to create novel vocabulary cards.
However, with limited school budget, I have not been able to replenish our supplies. Therefore, I am submitting this proposal for the following items listed below.
