Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are creative and eager to learn. I serve over 700 students in Young 5's through 8th grade.

In art class, we use a variety of mediums to express ourselves creatively, show what we know, and challenge ourselves to try new things.

My scholars are challenged daily to take risks. We learn through our mistakes, support one another as growing artists, and build our confidence as we learn new skills. Each year, we complete a variety of projects that enrich skills in core content areas and enhance my students' love of the visual arts.

My Project

In art class, we use a variety of materials to help students develop and refine their artistic talents. Every year we do at least one clay/ ceramics project. For example, depending on the grade, students will create Valentine hearts, ladybugs, initials, fish, or pinch pots.

Once students have created their ceramic project, we will fire them in the kiln; then, students will have the opportunity to apply glaze in their choice of colors.

After this, we will fire the projects once again to 'set' the glaze.

With this project, we will refresh our supplies so that every scholar may complete at least one clay/ ceramics project. They will use the glaze in the finishing process, and will use the brushes to apply the glaze. Over 700 artists will be impacted by this project!

For many of my artists, these projects are their first opportunity to experiment with clay or with the clay firing process. Many students have said that this is the highlight of their year and their favorite project they've done. They keep these projects for years!
