My Kindergartners are loving and caring, active and spontaneous but they have so many hardships to overcome both in and outside our classroom. Between living in low income homes, free and reduced lunch, homelessness, and foster care, they still come into class eager and ready to learn. I may not be able to control what goes on in their home lives, but I give my all to make their school lives warm and inviting.
Coming into class and learning to read is one of the hardest things they have to do but they put 110% into it.
Most of my Kindergartners are having trouble learning the most basic sight words, let alone being able to read Kindergarten leveled text. We do not have a reading curriculum that supports their reading levels and end up having to find reading books they can read by themselves from other sources but not in their interest levels. 83% of my students are reading below grade level. I want to provide them a life long love of learning by providing them the tools for them to succeed!
My Project
These Scholastic Magazines will help my kindergartners learn more about the world around us. The topics Scholastic will cover; school, community, holidays, and science, are all relevant to my kiddos. The authentic reading material of a magazine are things most of them do not get to interact with.
In our inner-city, my students do not get to go many places and these Scholastic Magazines will open them up to a world of new discoveries.
I want to broaden their knowledge base to include places they would not normally get to go and things they do not get to see or experience.
