Help me give my students binders, pencil pouches, dry erase markers, and classroom timers to update our classroom visual schedules!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our elementary school is filled with diversity, acceptance, and opportunity! Students from kindergarten through fifth grade learn in cooperative learning situations and small group settings. As a teacher of students with special needs, I enjoy seeing how my kindergarten through second-grade students are accepted into the school environment.
My students enjoy inclusive experiences and are respected by peers and teachers.
They participate in class, have best friends, and share giggles at recess. They have different learning styles, strengths, likes, and dislikes. Despite these differences, they all have one thing in common: the traditional school learning environment is tough for them to navigate. They struggle to learn, focus, sit still, and stay quiet, and they simply find traditional methods of learning very difficult.
My students are my heroes. They overcome so much every day, and they always find a way to shine bright. My amazing students find success in nontraditional classroom materials, differentiated classroom arrangements, and hands-on learning experiences. They require alternative materials to maintain engagement and encourage independence. These materials are often not provided by traditional school and curriculum supplies. With the right classroom environment and the right materials, my students can experience success and the joy of learning!
Many of the students in my classroom have social/emotional needs so we constantly use visual schedules, timers, and social stories to help everyone make it through the school day! Each student carries a binder that includes an individualized visual schedule, and personalized social stories.
Visual schedules and timers help to reduce student anxiety, so it is imperative that students keep these materials with them at all times!
As students go through their school day, they use a dry erase marker to cross off completed sections of their visual schedule. This helps them know what comes next, and how long they have to wait for their favorite parts of the school day. Timers are another effective way to reduce student anxiety, as they provide a visual support for students to see how much time remains in any given activity.
RIght now, all of my students have their own binder, however, many of these binders are currently being held together by duct tape, and some of the rings are coming apart. We need new binders! Each student has their own dry erase marker in the binder, however these markers are attached to the binders with yarn or Ziploc bags. We need pencil pouches to properly hold our materials in our binders! While all of my students use timers at least once a day, we only have three timers to share between all students in the classroom. We need more timers!
My students rely on their visual schedules and timers to reduce their anxiety and maintain a positive attitude throughout the school day! We need updated materials to improve our current system!
