At ACORN Community High School, we are implementing the program AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is an in-school academic support program that prepares students for college eligibility and success.
ACORN Community High School is a Title I school with over 85% of our students eligible for free lunch. Approximately 90% of our students are African-American, 10% are Latino. What better way to help our students than by providing an additional support network of teachers and staff members to help them determine their future?
NOW, FOR THE REALLY FUN STUFF...
We want to create a community within AVID and start off the 2005-2006 school year with a bang! We want our 9th and 10th grade AVID students to participate in a Scavenger Hunt at the Museum of Natural History. The Hunt is organized by Watson Adventures and will be complete with clues, maps and prizes. For many students, this will be their first time at the Museum of Natural History -- what better way to get to know the museum and bond together than a scavenger hunt at the museum?
HOW THE HUNT WORKS…
Students will be divided into teams of about 5 people before the hunt. The Watson Adventure staff members explain how the hunt works, hand out materials and send everyone on their way. Each team receives a route to take, a list of questions to answer, an answer sheet, a pen and a map. The object, of course, is to get as many answers to the questions given in the allotted time.
During the course of the hunt students will be able to practice their map-reading skills, as well as team-building. In addition, students will go on an expedition across centuries, civilizations and solar systems, covering dinosaurs to diamonds, dioramas to cosmic dust. They will explore the dazzling planetarium, find out why a T-rex can't stand up, discover New York's largest rodent, and much more.
Please help to start our year off on the right foot -- sponsor our ACORN Community High School students today! THANK YOU!
