This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In order to better service my students, this year I have decided to use BlackBoard, an online course program, to give my students the freedom to access assignments and class materials from home.
I am a 7th grade Science teacher at a charter school in a low socio-economic community of California. A large percentage of our students are at-risk and economically disadvantaged. We also service a large percentage of special needs students and English Language learners.
In middle school, students are just beginning to learn independence and self-responsibility. Organization is often an issue that many students struggle to overcome. In the past, I have always made plenty of extra copies of the documents I use in my classroom, in order to accommodate students who may have lost the work. I also make extra copies to accommodate my special needs students who often ask me to provide them with another set of documents. To help alleviate this issue, as well as to attempt to "go green", I decided to begin using Blackboard so I can upload these documents to a main page that my students and their parents can access 24 hours a day. Students can then print extra copies at their own leisure whenever they want or simply view a document without using extra paper to print it out. Unfortunately, in education, it is nearly impossible to go completely paperless, but scanning documents into Blackboard will help reduce the amount of money that is spent on paper waste.
Having a Canonscan scanner available in my classroom would allow me to scan and upload all documents I use in my classroom to give my students and their parents full access at home. This will not only reduce paper usage for my school, but will also alleviate stress that my students may feel when they discover they have lost a document and do not know how to retrieve a second copy. They will be able to log on to BlackBoard and retrieve or view any document used in class, as well as print any needed extra copies, anytime, anywhere.
Your donation and help will greatly benefit my students this year, as well as in numerous years to come, as I will continue to use BlackBoard and all its benefits for the many years ahead in my career as a teacher.
