Help me give my students the tools needed to build a to scale LEGO model of our edible vegetable garden in our school courtyard for display at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show.
My students love Family and Consumer Science (FACS) class! For those of you who are not familiar, FACS is what used to be known as Home Economics. At our junior high all 6th grade students get to take one quarter of FACS, then in 7th and 8th grade students choose among an array of semester-long electives, including FACS.
When taking FACS class, students learn about many different life skills, including cooking, sewing, laundry, child development, babysitting, gardening, design, and more.
I see a wide range of skills when students walk into my classroom - some students have done it all at home, some have cooked but done nothing else, and some have not done ANY of these things for themselves at all.
Because FACS covers such a wide range of topics, I am always looking for new materials to use to teach and inspire my students. Having up-to-date equipment is critical in advancing learning and growth of my 12 through 14 year old students. I am excited to get started with DonorsChoose.org to work together to bring new and unique projects to my young learners.
My Project
Our school has the honor of being the only non-agricultural school to exhibit at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show this March, 2019. We have been working hard in class to create a plan to build a scaled down model of our school vegetable garden so we can share our successes and what we have learned in our first year of gardening at the show. Students learned how to maintain proper scale, how to pick the correct size LEGOs to fit our specific needs and, if funded, will be able to work on building the model all on their own.
