My students need scales for their chemistry labs. These mini scales are perfect for students to use in pairs and groups, with one larger scale for comparison.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in need of developing skills for making measurements, as well as developing the skills to work in teams.
Having enough scales for students to work in pairs or small groups would be the ideal situation for teaching them to learn about collaboration and teamwork in a scientific setting.
The students, being in middle school and surrounded by issues of racial tension and a lack of trust, are often hesitant to help one another in class. My goal is to get them working together and cheering each other on by the end of the year. Group labs are the perfect opportunity to create that space.
My Project
The students will utilize the scales in several of their physical and life science labs. They will be put into pairs or teams, depending on the size of the class, and given problems to solve that involve using the scales, sharing data, and pooling information. The scales will be used to foster critical engagement with one another and with the science materials.
The donations to the project will make a difference in my classroom because I do not yet have scales to work with.
Our school has a few triple beam balances that the science teachers must share, but no digital scales. Having these scales will help our classroom environments and labs become more efficient, as well as accurate. They are also tactile materials that the students can work with and collaborate over. This will make a huge difference in the classroom culture.
