This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have been a teacher for 9 amazing years! I have had the chance to touch many lives, and what I would like to do is offer incentives for students that go the extra mile each day to do better. Every year I have a handful of students that I like to reward each week/month with snacks as a way of pushing them to go the extra mile. These students are often not rewarded at home, I want to change that. I want to teach them that when you work hard, you will be acknowledged and rewarded for your efforts.
My Project
My students live in a poor community in Newark, NJ. They often come to school hungry. Often times, teachers are their "life-line" and we give them snacks from our own lunches. On a daily basis, this occurs. In the past, I have purchased snacks with my own funds. It has been a financial burden at times, but I know it will motivate my students to work hard if I tell them "Hey you finish that essay and this granola bar is all yours." Most of the time I give them the snack whether they finish or not because I can not bear to see them go hungry. Therefore, I am asking for support in obtaining snacks for my students to motivate them to learn, and to reward them when they go the extra mile on a test, essay, etc.
