Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Special Education reading Intervention teacher working with groups of struggling or non-readers. I teach at a school where over 90% of the students qualify for free lunch/reduced-price lunch. My students are growing up in a school district that is identified as the poorest congressional district in our city where most of the families are living below poverty line.
My students are identified as struggling readers and often lose focus during learning for reasons beyond their control.
I also support a group of dedicated and enthusiastic PreK3s (yes 3 year olds!) and with them and my upper grades I'm helping them develop socially and emotionally. My students are very hard working and even though most of them live in a community facing extreme poverty they come to class dedicated to work.
School is their refuge and a place to find their voice. Many of my students have disabilities specifically: learning disabilities, speech & language disabilities, ADHD and Autism. I want classroom resources that allows them access to their learning and to teach them strategies to manage their disabilities and gain independence over their own learning and find a voice!
My Project
Bullying has become a real problem in the school system. The goal of my project is to approach the topic in the now beginning of the year. I want to speak to the bullies and the bullied before problems arise and escalate. This book utilizes superheroes and shows how everyone has a vulnerable side and should be respected and treated fairy. It explains in an age appropriate way how easy it is to think of your friends and support them in a "super" way. It also show children how to be aware of what bully behavior looks like and how to change the mindset of the bully. I want to use this title as a book of the month selection and have students take home their own copies of the text so that we can read and complete activities at home and in school.
