Help me give my students materials to support engagement and independence as we begin our new Phonics Units of Study to support reading and writing development.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are eager to learn. Most of them come from families who struggle financially and depend on free or reduced lunch as well as the use of materials, books, and technology at school that they do not have access to at home. Our school is in a small city, in an area where many students reside in government provided low income housing. They don't have easy access to transportation to visit the local libraries, join clubs such as Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, or participate in after school activities unless there is a bus provided.
Although many of my students are below grade level in math and reading, they are eager to tackle new concepts and ideas in math and are motivated to become independent readers.
Our school and my classroom provide opportunities for our students to grow academically and as leaders by supporting them as they take on new responsibilities, learn to collaborate with others, and develop social skills in order to reach their maximum potential. It is our goal to develop the whole child and provide a strong foundation for each student who enters the doors of our school.
My Project
The mini magnetic whiteboards and magnetic letters will provide my students the opportunity to remain engaged during phonics lessons and independent practice. As we implement our new phonics units, students will be able to practice immediately using the magnetic letters and the mini whiteboards during our phonics lesson. This will support engagement and acquisition of the new skills taught each day.
The availability of magnetic letters and mini magnetic whiteboards will support independence and provide another resource for small group instruction.
Students will have materials at hand to practice stretching out words to spell them as they are writing, rather than depending on memory of our lesson to make spelling attempts.
The Flex Comfy Floor Seats will enhance our classrooms flexible seating options and further support engagement during small group and independent work time, therefore enhancing growth in reading and writing.
