I am a speech therapist for a District 75 school in New York City. I work with pre-school and elementary age children; who are multiply handicapped and autistic. Working with children with these extreme special needs, I am forced to make adaptations to all of my speech lessons and to work creatively. As a speech therapist, I focus on the communication aspect of my students learning. Most of my students are non-verbal and rely heavily on pictures and photographs to express themselves. I am 1 of 6 therapists in my department and we have only 1 digital camera. We try to give each of us equal time to use the camera, but there is a greater demand than supply. This is why I am asking for another digital camera to add to our speech department. I am also asking for a protective case for the camera when it is not in use. My students do not learn in the same way as other students and my class materials may not seem conventional. However, these items could help open a whole new world to a child with very special needs.
