My students are motivated and willing to learn all that they can about the journalism profession. My school is home to three publications and a media program. My school is 55% minority, and more than half are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
My students want to create the best publications possible.
They stay late and come to school early. They cover sports, school events, on-campus news, and localized global topics to our school. The journalism program has won countless awards. The yearbook was a finalist, and the online news site won the National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker award in 2016.
My Project
From football games and plays to band concerts and track meets, my students are constantly heading to cover events. We currently have a few cameras that students can borrow but most only have the standard 18-55 mm lens. Any budding photographer knows that this lens does not work well in most situations. I'm requesting these new lenses so that my students have some options for when they're covering events for the morning show, newspaper or yearbook. The 50mm lens is great for portraits and the longer lens will help get close to the action during sports games and track meets. These lenses will help improve the quality of my student's work while helping them learn to work with new equipment.
