This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach about 100 dedicated, creative, and dynamic students. They are in grades 9-12 (high school). They practice at lunch time and stay after school every day to work on additional projects. Many of them have music endeavors that span beyond class projects and want careers in music.
My students create film scores, play instruments, sing, write songs, and enjoy music.
They perform concerts at school, march in parades, compete at festivals, and are used to having their work shown in public.
100% of students at my school qualify for free or reduced price meals. Many students tell me that this is the only school they've ever attended that has a music class. Please help me make this a meaningful experience for them!
My Project
Saxophone players go through a lot of reeds. The reed is the thin piece of wood that vibrates to give the saxophone its sound, which mimics the human voice. I'm blessed with a half-dozen new saxophone players this year, and they're making enough music to where we need new reeds right away.
A box of reeds will help six new students play for two months.
The students' sweet sound only lasts as long as the wooden reed can maintain its strength, and moisture and use wear it down faster. It's a good problem to have: the more students who play and the more they practice, the more reeds we need!
