Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have the biggest smiles and friendliest attitudes at the school. We promote and welcome anyone who seems different or "weird" on campus. These kids live in a rough neighborhood and would often prefer to live at school than to go home. Ninety-nine percent of our students are on free or reduced price lunch and only a small percentage of students go to college. The theatre is a place to have friends, a family, a purpose, and to learn skills to give them a career after high school.
My Project
Our school has started a new technical program called CTE Technical Theatre, but before we build large-scale theatrical productions, students need to learn how to use basic tools they will find in everyday woodshops.
These Miter Saws and woodworking supplies will be used for the "Welcome to the Shop" lessons where they will use scrap wood to create DIY projects for their home.
These items can be projects like towel racks, bookshelves, bottle openers (school appropriate beverages of course), or even key hook plaques by the front door. Whatever they desire, they can build!
Not only will they need the new miter saws to build, but I want them to feel safe as they are working with dangerous items. The ear muffs and c-clamps will assist in a safe hearing as well as keeping the wood from moving around as they cut.
