I work in an inclusive 4th grade classroom. This means that all 23 students receive all their education in the classroom setting with their peers. I co-teach with another professional, this way no student has to be removed from the classroom in order to receive an appropriate individualized education. This is an amazing program; however, it brings together a lot of diverse needs under one roof. In order to best meet the needs of all the learners within the classroom, my co-teacher and I place a heavy emphasis on character development and choice in the classroom setting.
My Project
The Next Generation Science Standards are a multi-state effort to create new education standards that are rich in content and practice, arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education. However, the content is very deep and the textbook is very advanced. Our students need access to different leveled reading books on the same subject in order to approach the science curriculum in different way. Our newest unit is focused on Energy. These leveled books will help all students access the curriculum in a way that works best for them. These books will help us differentiate instruction for students that are reading below grade level, as well as, provide enrichment for students that need to be challenged.
