Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I started working at a Title I school, I thought there would be plenty of Title I money for supplies, intervention reading programs, and supplemental personnel. However, this is not the case. Luckily, what my students lack in resources they make up for in effort and enthusiasm!
My students are from many different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds; some of my kids have special needs, others have speech and language issues, and a couple are in the foster care system.
Some do not have a lot of help at home, but my goal is to make sure that their desire to learn keeps growing, by providing them with the right tools needed for success.
My Project
Most of my first graders can identify the main idea and details of a story, which is a great start. As we get further into the year, they must master reading standards that address cause and effect, sequencing events, and the difference between fact and opinion. Acquiring these skills is much more difficult and requires constant practice.
I am requesting resources that will allow my students to attain mastery of each first grade reading standard.
These centers will help my students practice independently and self correct their own activities. Giving students ownership of their own learning, makes it that much more meaningful when they succeed.
