My Students

Since the day I started teaching in Milwaukee, my students have faced various challenges and obstacles, whether in or out of the classroom. Many of these students face different types of situations on a daily basis. As a result, obtaining their education can be even more of a challenge at times. Keeping this in mind, it's important for me to provide my kids with an educational experience that is relevant, intellectually stimulating, and engaging.

My students have a sense of eagerness and desire to showcase their talents and abilities, but don't always have the resources they need to do so.

Many of them come from circumstances that put them in situations where they don't get a "fair shake" or a chance to showcase their skills and talents to the fullest. It is my hope that by getting projects funded, my students will have the resources needed to get past those circumstances and display their full potential.

My Project

This year, my Creative Writing students have expressed interest in doing a graphic novel unit. Many of them already read graphic novels, or have expressed interest in learning how to do so. For them to do this, it's important to me to find texts that are engaging, and are also exceptional examples of what makes an effective graphic novel, beyond just having colorful pictures. Included in my grant are four high-interest novels: Batman: The Killing Joke, The Dark Knight Returns, Flashpoint, and Infinity Gauntlet.

With your support, students will have the opportunity to read critically acclaimed graphic novels that are of high-interest to them.

These novels are pieces of work that not only serve as effective mentor texts, but can also be read critically in the style that any other novel. By teaching them how to read critically with a text that is of high-interest to them, I can continue to develop their love for reading, or if they don't have one, begin that process. I've often said that those who say they don't enjoy reading just haven't found the right book yet, and if this project is funded, many of them will.

If this grant is funded, students will read the text through a critical lens and explore themes and literary elements in the text. Then they will examine the text through the perspective of a writer, and use it as a model for creating their own original work. Unfortunately, Creative Writing classes in my school aren't given any materials, and many students don't have the monetary means to acquire them on their own. With your support, however, they will be given this opportunity.
