Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle school teachers across the country hear the same thing from 12, 13, and 14 year olds. "I used to like reading in 4th grade," they tell us. "Now there aren't enough good books."

My students attend a 6th through 12th grade charter school that is focused on college acceptance and graduation.

The majority of my students will be the first in their family to attend college. We have a high ESL population and a high refugee population.

My Project

Every middle school kid is really an "at risk" reader. But, we know that we can't lose them in middle school! It is our job as educators and as those who know the joy of a wonderful reading life, to get to know our kids and to get to know TONS of books. Then we have to say to each child, "Oh, I don't know why I didn't think of this before. You and this book are the perfect match!" In order to do this, we must have wonderful classroom libraries that are full of books that kids want to read. Because research shows that struggling readers need to spend significant amounts of time actually reading books that they have chosen and that are on their reading level, we have built an independent reading time into the schedule.

Many of our students come to our school reading significantly below grade level.

Many of them don't believe that there are books that they can relate to. Our students are beginning to become invested in their own reading, and they are asking for more books to choose from. Please be part of helping us fill our shelves and a part of giving our middle school students the gift of a thriving reading life.
