My students are amazing. They come to school prepared to learn and try their best to achieve our high expectations every day.
Our school is located in a low-income area with most students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Most of my students have limited resources outside of school, so our school may provide their only chance to experience enriching activities. My goal every year is to create an environment that is warm, safe and welcoming while maintaining a fun, creative learning atmosphere.
Now more than ever students need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to manage money effectively. With an economic downturn looming, this creates an opportunity to help students learn critical financial concepts. We are requesting budget system binders and play money that I plan to use to help students learn how to count money, learn financial appropriate terms and make better decisions about saving, spending, and sharing money.
These early experiences with money are important and can contribute to better future financial decisions.
Students will first set goals they would like to have for their money and how they plan to achieve it. Students will then earn money throughout the week by completing classroom task. At the end of the week students will use their budget system binders to place money in either the spend, save, or share bag. At the of each trimester we will reflect on their initial goals and see if they met it or need to adjust their budgeting plan.
While economics is often neglected in the elementary curriculum, my class will not fall victim to that statistic. Help me give my students the skills of financial literacy.
