Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the best job in the whole school- I get to sing, say, dance, and play with every single child in the building. Approximately 70% of the school receives free or reduced lunch. We are a Title One School and have recently been identified as a "target school" (school in need of improvement). Despite the challenges we face daily, I am looking to motivate my students with meaningful musical experiences.
In my classroom, we use music to make connections and build community.
My students love to play instruments and create their own songs, however, due to space constraints we have music class in the gymnasium. I teach in several buildings and therefore I am not at this school every day. Our xylophones were damaged and had to be moved to the basement of the school for their own protection. It's my hope to save the music and have a safe way to store the instruments where my students can access them.
My Project
This wheeled metal cabinet will make it possible for students to use our Orff instruments (xylophones) during music class. As a Level 1 and 2 Orff-Schulwerk trained music educator, I believe that students learn best when they are creating, playing, and performing. This cabinet would give students the opportunity to become composers and better musicians by exploring these melodic instruments.
Xylophones are heavy and can be awkward for children to move or carry.
This mobile cabinet would give students the freedom to move the instruments themselves safely and instill in them a sense of ownership and responsibility. Currently our xylophones are stored in the school basement, and can only be carried up two flights of stairs by our custodial staff. Please help us save the xylophones from a lonely life in the basement!
