My students need a webcam to Skype with bee keepers and other experts, a bee house, a bee keepers uniform, informational bee books and bee life cycle models to understand why saving the honeybees is essential.
Welcome to our school with all of our amazing students! We are an inner-city school with over 540 PreK-6 grade students, all who receive free breakfast and lunch. Students keep thanking me for the new resources and supplies and I tell them it couldn’t happen without your support!
Being a STEAM school, it is essential that I explore and introduce hands on, STEAM activities so that my students are exposed to new science, technology, engineering, arts and math curriculum.
I have been lucky enough to be teaching at the same school for 24 years and am grateful each and every day for my students.
My Project
Did you know that honeybees are in danger of becoming extinct and that some of our food sources are threatened? Bees are vital to at least 1/3 of all crops worldwide. I wasn't aware of this until recently and I want to make sure that my students learn how important bees are to our ecosystem and how they can help save them. Using the Flying Classroom STEM Expedition: Honey Bees Need For Pollination, students will follow Captain Irving as he becomes a bee keeper for a day. Students will learn how foods such as honey, almonds, chocolate and coffee need pollination by bees and how their declining population is affecting these crops. The resources that I am requesting will greatly enhance our unit on bees and will also be followed by a field trip to a local environmental site that is grant funded.
Using our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) curriculum, these resources will provide students with a webcam to Skype with bee keepers and experts in the field (including Flying Classroom educators), informational books about bees, a bee house model to learn how to construct their own bee houses (which will be donated to local environmental educational sites), bee life cycle models and a bee keeping uniform which will give students additional knowledge and interest about honey bees.
Students will also research various types of bees to gain further knowledge and understanding of their importance and create a google slide explaining all that they have learned. My goal is to provide students with up to date knowledge and expertise so they understand the importance of honeybees and these resources will help to integrate the Flying Classroom Honeybee unit with our STEAM unit. Thank you for reading about our project and the importance of saving the bees!
