Every day, I am surrounded by the most amazing students! Even though they come from a variety of backgrounds, including race, religion, and family structure, we all work together to create a unique learning experience; we work hard at instilling a love of learning and exploring that will last a lifetime.
My students are truly exceptional!
They persevere when faced with a challenge, creatively inspire our community, and believe in one another. They are tomorrow's leaders and world-changers. They are our future and together we can help them soar to their dreams.
My Project
According to a 2015 study by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, teaching financial literacy to kids before they enter college is crucial to helping them grow into adults who can achieve financial security and success. It is never too early to learn these important life lessons, and that is why I want to offer this project for my students.
Allowing my students to use their financial literacy skills within our own class DOJO store is my goal with this project.
As we read and discuss our picture books: "Those Shoes," "You Can't Buy a Dinosaur with a Dime," "Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday," and "A Chair for My Mother", my students will begin to understand the importance of not only saving their money, but the importance of creating positive financial choices by analyzing why they are choosing to buy an item. To further this understanding, my students will earn monster dollars to spend using the Class DOJO program. They will gain monster dollars through a variety of choices such as keeping a clean work area, helping others, and perseverance during projects. Throughout the year they will have their own Monster Money accounts to review in a folder, in which they will create financial goals (which items to purchase.)
On the Financial Fridays when the DOJO store is open, students will calculate the money they have earned, add it into their monster accounts, and then decide what and if they would like to purchase items at that time.
But the fun doesn't stop there!!! We are asking for two finance based games, Learning Resources Money Bags Coin Value Game and Exact Change Game, that will continue to reinforce my students' money skills in an exciting and engaging way!
