I teach 5th grade science and math in Algood, TN. We are located outside city limits in a small town. We emphasize the phrase, It's all good in Algood. We are a high poverty district with many various styles of living situations. Some enjoy simply coming to school to get away from unpleasant situations.
Many students come to my class with a strong disliking for math, but after leaving my class they feel like true scientists/mathematicians that can do anything they set their minds to.
I love my students because they are so much fun. They get my sense of humor and sarcasm. We like to make learning entertaining through various modalities. My students are special because they each love learning new things. They are full of questions and are always digging deeper into their own thinking. They are eager to help without being asked.
My Project
Originally I had my students get out a sheet of paper to work out problems to show their understanding of a given concept. After awhile I realized we were wasting so much paper. As a result, I got a recycling bin for my classroom and switched over to whiteboards. This is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially in math. I have students show their work so that I may identify any misconceptions they may have. I can also see various methods students are using so I can call certain students up to the board to work their problem for their peers. This may help struggling students with a new way to work a problem that they may not have known to do. Over time I started to notice this method was not working as I initially planned either.
Some issue that started arising are: the markers started drying out, students were unable to afford the markers, erasers fall apart or even vanish, and the boards become stained.
This has started to cause disruptions and wastes class time because students are now having to go get another marker or find someone that can lend them an extra. Those individuals are missing out on instruction or have distracted other learners. These LCD tablets will eliminate the issues I am seeing and allow all students equal opportunity.
