Save Our Oceans! Learning about Human Impact on the Ocean
Help me give my students these informational texts to support our ocean unit. The students will learn about the Great Pacific Garbage patch and explore the watery surface of our planet with the Ocean Encyclopedia.
I am a fifth grade teacher in South Carolina. My class includes students with learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, gifted and talented, and English Language learners. The reading level of my students span from late second grade to eighth grade, and come to me with a wide variety of life experiences. Approximately half of my students receive free or reduced price lunch.
I try to make learning so much fun that students can't wait to come to school each day!
I incorporate flexible seating, hands-on lessons, conversations and technology in my lessons. My students have the ability to move about the room as needed to best suit the lesson and activity for each subject.
My Project
Students will work in a group to learn about various habitats within the ocean. Through inquiry, students will write questions and find answers by reading articles in the Ultimate Oceanpedia: The Most Complete Ocean Reference Ever, Ocean: A Visual Encyclopedia, and DK Eyewitness Books: Ocean: Discover what lies beneath the watery surface of our planet from its sunlit shal books.
Using information gathered through research, the groups will create a multi-media presentation.
The students will also learn about the negative human impact of the Pacific Garbage Patch by reading Plasic Ahoy! and how individuals can help improve this situation, as well as prevent others like this.
