Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, I see that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning space and experiences.
My students are creative, clever, caring, and ready to make music every day.
They like to dance, sing, play instruments, and act. We use traditional and non traditional instruments to explore sound, use of sound, and create compositions/improvisation. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of musical and academic excellence.
My Project
My students have been working with the Little Kids Rock curriculum playing rock band instruments and drum set. We meet in a regular classroom sized space and sound is a huge problem.
Beginning students have a difficult time controling their volume levels on the drum set.
While other students find it difficult to focus on their instruments and individual parts with all the drum sounds. Drum set mutes will make a dramatic difference in how loud the drum set is.
The drum pads and sticks will alow more students to practice at the same time giveing them a quiet way to practice the sticking patterns independently or in small groups. This will improve the oveall skill of each band as the drummer is an essential part of the ensemble.
