Save Kindergarteners' Reading and Math From the COVID Monster

My Students

Kindergarten has been hit hard by COVID. Kindergarteners struggle in virtual learning far more than older grades because they don't have the reading and writing skills necessary to make online learning effective. Additionally, language and math skills are difficult to teach without hand-held manipulatives like blocks, magnets, buttons, etc. which most students don't have at home. This is especially true for our students, over half of which come from low-income or extremely low-income households.

With students back in school now, kindergarten has been doing all we can to help kids catch-up in their math and reading, especially for students who may not have attended Pre-K schooling because of COVID closures.

My Project

COVID requires having more manipulatives in the classroom as they cannot be shared without appropriate cleaning between students. Additionally, all materials have to be labeled for each student to decrease the chance of spreading disease. The materials requested in this project will help students learn math and reading and help us appropriately label and use materials in the safest way possible.

These materials give students more options for learning numbers, letters, shapes, and patterns and allow us to clearly label all materials so learning can be done in-person safely.

Some Specific Learning Examples:

--The number puzzles help students understand the order and relative size of numbers 1-9.

--The button maker, tag clips and hole punches help us label materials including coats, backpacks, cubbies, etc. so students don't accidentally share germs they shouldn't.

--The puzzles help students recognize shapes and how they fit together. They also learn how parts build a whole which helps them in both reading and math skills.

--The lego-style bricks help students practice counting, fine motor skills and following directions. They also help them learn the shape of numbers and letters which helps improve their writing skills.
