Imagine trying to type a three page research paper in thirty minutes because you don't have a printer at home. Stressing out because the bell is about to ring and you haven't had time to proofread yet. Always in a rush because you can't afford a flash drive to save your work.
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
My AVID students are in the academic middle, and they have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families. AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation.
My Project
Not only are my students enrolled in our school's toughest classes, such as honors and Advanced Placement®, but also take the AVID elective. For one period a day, they learn organizational and study skills; work on critical thinking and asking probing questions; get academic help from peers and college tutors; and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable. Their self-images improve, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students. I have several computers in my classroom for them to use at any time. Many do not have flash drives to save their homework or projects, so they rush to get everything done in one class period. This is not the best way to complete assignments. They would be so grateful for these flash drives so they can work in my room, the library, and their home.
AVID students are more likely to take AP classes, complete their college eligibility requirements, and get into four-year colleges than students who don't take AVID.
These flash drives will give my students the equal advantages that other college bound students at our school already have. AVID also helps ensure students, once accepted to college, possess the higher-level skills they need for college success. They need to get used to this technology if they want to be successful in college.
