Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school's students come from low-income families. They are sweet, energetic, and eager to learn! These students come from a diverse background. Some of them are bilingual with English as a second language and all of them have diverse needs.
They love to learn and get excited about coming to school.
My school is a positive and energetic learning community with students who love school. I want to provide all of my students with materials that are best suited for their needs. Our public school bends over backward to help our students as much as possible, but budget cuts have severely cut funding and I just can't afford to give them everything they need.
My Project
Instruction in the area of financial literacy is critical from an early age. My students are learning the basics of financial literacy. We are learning to add, subtract, and compare numbers. We are also learning the value of coins and adding and subtracting money. All of these concepts are the foundation of financial literacy. My students have been telling me that they want to buy new school supplies, but they don't have the funds to do so. I would like to add school supplies to our classroom store. I chose all of their favorite school supplies: markers, smencils, colored pencils and Model Magic to add to the class store. My students will be able to create a savings plan and budget to purchase their favorite school supplies from the class store.
By opening a real-world store in my class, I am teaching my students to save money and budget for their wants.
The opportunity to "buy" and do some long-term saving for their own favorite items will be very motivating for my second graders to learn the basics of financial literacy. My students will be able to experience the importance of financial literacy education. I can't wait to open the class store!
