I teach a class of 28 amazing second graders. They are loving, intelligent, kind, and funny. They come to school wanting to learn and become better citizens.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and most come from families at lower income levels.
Many of my students come from challenging home environments and have limited resources at home. Many of them do not have basic supplies to help them succeed. The one thing they all have in common is that they are eager to learn.
My Project
I believe that education in financial literacy must begin early! My students are learning the basics of financial literacy. We are learning to count large numbers, add, subtract, and compare numbers. We are also learning the value of coins and adding money. All of these concepts are the foundation of financial literacy. My students have been telling me that they want to buy their favorite read aloud books, but they don't have the funds to do so. I would like to add a bookstore to our classroom store. My student love books and reading. I would like to tie their love of reading to financial literacy education by adding books to our class store. I chose their favorite books and series to add to the store. My students would be able to save their class money and budget for the purchase of big ticket books from their favorite authors. They love Elephant and Piggie books, Pigeon books, Mercy Watson books, Gingerbread Man books, and more!
By opening a real-world bookstore in my class, I am teaching my students to save money and budget for their wants.
I would also like to add to my financial literacy read aloud books so that I can discuss this important skill in a captivating way. I would like to motivate my students with all of their favorite books in the class store. I can't wait to see their faces when they see all of these amazing books available for purchase with their class money. The opportunity to "buy" and do some long-term saving for their own favorite books would motivate my students to learn the basics of financial literacy. My students will be able to learn the importance of saving money. Thank you for your support!
