My students are high energy, critical thinking, research experts! They love designing their own projects for genius hour and extension projects when regular classroom work is complete. Sixth grade is a tough time for anyone while trying to figure out friendships and who you are, so they certainly keep me on my toes!
Coming from a rural community and a small school, often times my kids feel like they don't have the same educational opportunities as our bigger city counterparts.
It is my goal to provide them with everything they need to feel like they aren't missing out on what the "big schools have".
Sending my sixth graders into the rest of their careers as lovers of learning is possible by meeting them right where they are, giving them the tools to challenge themselves, and understanding that they have a voice in what works best for their education.
My Project
Not only will these three Chromebooks help save costs on printing out materials for my students, but they will engage them in a way no handout ever could! An essential part of learning is ownership and pride in your work and new skills. My sixth graders love taking ownership of their learning by completing extension assignments I affectionately call genius hour projects, when their regular classroom work is finished.
Right now my classroom has 5 pieces of technology to be shared between 23 middle school students, making sharing resources for extended learning a nightmare!
Our school has a computer lab and technology carts, but often times these are full or checked out making it difficult to have something available for the kids that zoom though the regular curriculum to use for expanded learning.
Chromebooks will help students with their technology fluency, give them access to online resources, and encourage them to take their learning outside of the assigned textbooks!
