Help me give my students a sensory table to facilitate exploration and naturally encourage them to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate and explore.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
For most of my students, when they walk through my door, it is their first schooling experience. It is my goal to create respectful, responsible citizens, creative problem solvers and critical thinkers who are prepared for their future and have a lifelong love of learning. I have a class of 22 energetic and eager 4 and 5 year olds. We learn best through hands-on, play experiences! We are always looking for opportunities to expand our learning with new tools.
We are a culturally diverse neighborhood school striving to create innovative programs to better serve the community.
Our school is unique in that we teach core subjects via a project-based approach, through inquiry, and play-based learning!
My Project
From birth through to early childhood, children use their senses to explore and try to make sense of the world around them. Providing opportunities for children to actively use their senses as they explore their world through ‘sensory play’ is crucial to brain development. The sensory table with lid will house materials for my Pre-K students to explore such as sand, water, beads, rocks, shredded paper, etc.
Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction.
Sensory tables also help with hyperactive or anxious students. A sensory table can have a calming effect them. The objects on the tables tend to capture children’s attention and engage their minds. The kids are presented with strange objects like clay, new textures like rice, and alluring smells like apple pie. This sensory table is the perfect size for a few students to stand around and explore. The lid will ensure our supplies stay clean.
